Places to have the best trekking experience in Kerala

To undertake an arduous journey scaling impregnable mountains is so taxing, thrilling and rewarding as well. It is a journey to the lap of nature, exploring and experiencing its wonders. Here is a list of places in Kerala where you can garner the best trekking experience.

Chembra Peak

Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad and the third highest peak in South India at an altitude of 2100 meters. This is one of the most trekked places in Kerala.  This place is a trekker’s haven and at the peak there is a heart shaped lake which is spectacular. Trek to Chembra is challenging as there is more rock climbing and steep climbing required than other places. The trek starts from the foot hill of Chembra Peak which is about 7 Kilometers from Meppadi.

Meesapulimala

Trekking Meesapulimala will be in the bucket list of every adventurer. A trek to the place and the view from the peak is believed to be heavenly. The trek here is less risky but strenuous and exhausting. Camping facilities and other accommodation facilities are arranged by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation at the foothill of the mountain.

Thusharagiri waterfalls

Thusharagiri literally means ‘snow caped mountains’ and the beautiful trekkable mountains are located near Kodencheri in Kozhikode district. The mountain is also the confluence of two streams originating from the Western Ghats forming Chalippuzha River. The highest of the three falls is the Thenpara Fall dropping from a height of 75 meter. The first waterfall can be scaled easily while the remaining two falls can be reached only through thick forest. The trekking and rock-climbing here is challenging through river path and numerous waterfalls.

Agasthyakoodam

Agasthyakoodam is a hill range in Western Ghats at an altitude of 6201 feet above sea and is located 62 kilometers away from Trivandrum. It is the second highest peak in Kerala after Anamudi (8842 feet).
The mountain is worshipped by both Buddhists and Hindus, as it is believed to be the abode of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara as well as of the sage Agastya, a disciple of Shiva.

Rajamalai

Rajamalai is a tiny hill station located inside Eravikulam National Park in Idukki district, 16 kilometer away from Munnar. Trip to Rajamalai is one of the must do things when you are in Munnar and it would be even more exciting f it is a bike ride. Rajamalai is also a favorite trekking spot in Munnar. Trek here would be spectacular with presence of lush grasslands and sparkling streams.

Anamudi

Anamudi Peak in Western Ghats is the highest point in South India at an altitude of 8842 feet. It can be reached from Munnar in 20 kilometers. Trekking Anamudi is quite challenging as well as enjoyable. Anamudi is also famous for Kurunji flowers that bloom once in 12 years. Top station near Munnar The trek path is very steep with deep valleys one side.

Vellari mala

Vellarimala lies at a distance of 13 km from Muthappanpuzha and 63 km from Kozhikode Railway Station Vellarimala is a mountain range spread across Thiruvambady Panchayat in Kozhikode district. It lies at an altitude of 2200 m and is a popular trekking spot around Kozhikode. Vellari Mala is part of the popular Camel’s Hump Mountains of the Western Ghats.
